GM to accelerate dealer consolidation

June 16, 2008 By: Category: Cars

Mark LaNeve,GM North America Vice President, Vehicle Sales, Service, Marketing.GM may have just half the market share it had 30 years ago, but the Detroit-based automaker still seems to have as many dealers as McDonald’s has drive-thrus. The General has slashed more than 2,000 dealerships over the past 12 years, but the company will accelerate closings in order to right-size its sales outlets. GM closed 260 stores in 2007 and another 23 in January of this year, but according to Automotive News, the automaker still has a sizable 6,753 member dealer body. That number seems even higher when considering that US number two automaker Toyota makes do with only 1,445 retail locations. Read the rest of this entry →

Maserati ‘Cinqueporte’ by StudioM & StudioTorino

Maserati may be finally turning a profit, but it still can’t have it both ways. As we previously reported, the Trident marque is apparently looking to have 911rival join its lineup instead of building the Kubang crossover. And while that may be good news for most of us, one oil-rich Arab sheik was hoping for something more versatile. Fortunately for him, cost is no object, so he’s commissioning a Maserati wagon of his own.

The unnamed Middle Eastern customer, who has previously ordered several bespoke Ferrari estate wagons, has commissioned this shooting-brake version of the Maserati Quattroporte. Dubbed “Cinqueporte,” the coachbuilt special currently exists only as a quarter-scale model, but is being realized by Italian design ateliers StudioM and StudioTorino. The coachbuilders will extend the roofline, craft folding rear seats and move the fuel tank to increase the Maserati’s utility. While the cost of the project has also not been disclosed, one of StudioM’s previous projects involved crafting a €350k custom interior for another customer’s Quattroporte. This thing’s not going to come cheap.

Irish politician wants country’s drivers to move right

Ireland driveWe don’t mean moving to the right ideologically, mind you. Senate leader Donie Cassidy wants Ireland to consider changing which side of the road people drive on. Like England, Ireland drives on the left side of the road, which might be a problem for an increasing number of people working in or visiting the country. The growing workforce migrates in large part from other parts of continental Europe. Similarly, Americans make up a good number of the tourists visiting Ireland. The common denominator is that both of those groups drive on the right side of the road in their native lands. By switching sides, Cassidy believes that the number of accidents involving visitors not accustomed to the left-side arrangement could be reduced. Read the rest of this entry →

Geneva ‘08 Preview: JCW MINI Cooper S speeds into focus

Following the relaunch of John Cooper Works as MINI’s in-house performance division, the little carmaker that could is preparing to unveil the new JCW MINI Cooper S at Geneva auto show, which is now approaching as rapidly as the hot hatch itself. Meanwhile details are emerging over what the first factory JCW will include, and it looks good.

In brief, JCW has reworked, upgraded and optimized the turbocharger, the pistons, the air intake, the transmission, the clutch, the brakes, the wheels, the exhaust and the ECU. The crew at MotoringFile, those intrepid gurus of everything MINI, says that while the bigger turbo, upgraded induction, cat-back exhaust and electronics do their part, the pistons are where it’s at, revving higher and smoother than those in the conventional Cooper S. Output is expected to be around 210-220 hp (versus the stock 172 hp), with torque skipping up to 206 lb-ft. To handle the extra juice, MINI fits a heftier six-speed with a chunkier clutch, putting the power down with lightweight rims and keeping it in check with JCW logo-shaped calipers, which will join an array of the new-look emblems placed around the car. We don’t yet know what the extra spec will amount to in discrenable performance numbers, but MINI has reportedly upped the top notch on the speedometer to 260 km/h (~160mph) instead of the 240km/h (~150mph) on the stock Cooper S.

All in all, the JCW Cooper S promises to amount to more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete factory performance vehicle. When the car launches next month, MINI is expected to highlight the close relation between the new JCW MINI, which will eventually be available in hatchback, Clubman and convertible forms, to the Challenge racer it prepared for the track.

Thanks for the tip, Gabe!

Champ Car and IRL working hard on truce for 2008 season

June 15, 2008 By: Category: Cars

Champ Car and the Indy Racing League, the two de facto open wheel racing series in North America since CART split after the 1995 season, are reportedly close to a truce that could reunite the two series as soon as the 2008 season. AutoWeek is reporting that Tony George, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and league chairman of the IRL, along with two of his associates, flew to Motegi, Japan recently to meet with track officials about changing the date of the Motegi race on April 19th. The reason is because the IRL race conflicts with the Long Beach Grand Prix, a mainstay on the Champ Car schedule. In order to consolidate the season schedules of both series, officials from both sides are apparently working hard to resolve conflicts like this. The fact that Tony George himself would fly to Japan indicates to AutoWeek that the man responsible for the split in the first place is serious about mending what he helped rend apart. And date conflicts between races are but one obstacle among many in bringing the two series back together, though they appear to be the biggest thing in the way of a resolution that could see a unified open-wheel racing series back on track in 2008. According to Jalopnik, yes. We reported yesterday that as a part of Project Genesis, Chrysler was planning to cut more models in addition to the PT Cruiser Convertible, Pacifica, Crossfire and Magnum. Jalopnik is reporting that, according to several of its sources, the decision has already been made that the Dodge Viper SRT10 will be cancelled, as well. The decision was reportedly made after Cerberus took control of Chrysler and was not part of the automaker’s future product plans prior to its split with Daimler. Read the rest of this entry →

Tata Nano tanking used car market in India

Anticipation for the Tata Nano in India is so high that the country’s used car market is taking a dive ahead of the car’s arrival later this year. Autocar is reporting that sales for India’s current most popular and cheapest car, a used Maruti 800, have already fallen 30 percent, and sales for a brand new Maruti 800 were down 20 percent last month. The Maruti is actually a rebadged version of the older Suzuki Altos. At nearly 200,000 rupees, it’s about twice as much to buy new as the $2,500 Tata Nano will be, despite being a smaller car. Indian car buyers apparently are not dumb. Why buy a new or used car today when you can wait until the end of the year and get a new Tata Nano for much less? The used car market in India could rebound a bit, however, after the Nano debuts. All those people waiting to buy one now might not end up liking the world’s cheapest car after they get a chance to drive one. Read the rest of this entry →

Spy Shots: 2010 Ford Mustang GT Convertible caught in a coincidence

We’ve shown you plenty of 2010 Ford Mustang spy shots in recent months, but after seeing the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 in person this week at the Chicago Auto Show, our eagerness for the pony car wars to begin anew has reached a fever pitch. These new spy shots of the refreshed Mustang GT that is scheduled to debut as a 2010 model focus exclusively on the car’s rear end where we get our best view yet of its new taillights. It appears that brake lights are inspired by three vertical brake lights that were on the original Mustangs. Brenda Priddy’s spy photog also happened to catch this particular convertible just as a train was passing by bearing “GT” on the side of a car. It must make spy photography so much easier when random objects in your environment happen to caption the subject of your shot. Read the rest of this entry →

Terror-stricken Dakar Rally heads to Central Europe, begins a new series

June 15, 2008 By: Category: Cars

Amaury Sport Organization, the group behind the Dakar Rally, has found a new venue after threats of terrorism caused the group to cancel the annual rally last month. The newly rescheduled and renamed race will be held April 20th through 26th in Romania and Hungary, offering a markedly different venue for an event that would otherwise be held in the arid landscape of the Sahara.
