BMW M10 Concept

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

The legend we had always known was that BMW and Mercedes-Benz had a gentleman’s agreement in place not to go after the Porsche 911. For whatever reasons, building a proper two-seat sports car was out of the question, though both build heavier and more accomodating grand touring machines that manage to skirt around the 911’s segment.

Then came the Audi R8. Being stuck in third place of a three-man race has forced Audi to branch out into new segments, and the R8 is a bold statement that might make someone shopping a 911 think twice. Audi’s bite of the forbidden fruit has apparently opened the door enough for BMW to consider a proper two-seat sports car. Sure, the M6 is plenty powerful with its 500-horse V10, more powerful than the R8 actually, but it’s a pretty porker that can carry four people.

German outlet Auto Zeitung is reporting that BMW has begun work on an R8/911 competitor. To be called the M10, this front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe would be the spiritual successor to the M1 and Z8. Though BMW has dabbled with carbon fiber in some of its recent designs, the M10 would likely be almost completely covered in the material to keep weight around 3,000 lbs. Power for the M10 could come from either the M3’s 420-hp, 4.2L V8 or the corporate 5.0L V10 producing around 550 horsepower. We would expect both engines to be offered so that BMW could square off the M10 against the R8 and RS8, as well as the 911 and 911 Turbo.

If BMW is working on such a car, development is going on behind many closed doors and any official info is far off. Regardless, such a car makes sense for the brand that purports to build ultimate driving machines.

2007 BMW 335i Convertible

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

BMW could’ve topped its fourth-generation 3 Series convertible with handsomely tailored five-layer twill fabric like the one it just rolled out on the supercalafragalistic Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. But while the fabulocracy will write a check for a Flying Lady whatever her scarf is made of, the working rich are a whole lot fussier. For them only a tin-top will do these days.
<div style=”float: right; padding-left: 4px;”>

Of course, BMW’s breadwinner couldn’t wear just any old tin-top. The company’s design ethic doesn’t include the flying wedges and chin-high beltlines that offer convertible-top designers a convenient place to pile the metal and glass out of sight. No, for the Roundel regulars, the junkin-the-trunk look would never do, and the existing three-piece-roof designs in use on competitors like the Volvo C70 and VW Eos were all deemed too bulky. So the company teamed with its German softtop collaborator Edscha AG to design what it claims is the slimmest-stacking top in the business.

<a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://bp1.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/RknpGMaahnI/AAAAAAAAAFs/hh45MwNsN3U/s1600-h/112_0704_01z%2B2007_BMW_335i_convertible%2Bleft_front_view.jpg”><img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;” src=”http://bp1.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/RknpGMaahnI/AAAAAAAAAFs/hh45MwNsN3U/s400/112_0704_01z%2B2007_BMW_335i_convertible%2Bleft_front_view.jpg” alt=”" id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064835548575336050″ border=”0″ />Indeed, the new top not only disappears below a trunk that looks similar to the coupe’s, it even preserves 7.4 of the 12.3 cubic feet of trunk space available when the top’s up. That slimness exacts a slight aesthetic penalty, however. Two of the rods that guide the front section back over the middle remain in view when the top is closed. They’re disguised as a couple of rubstrips running the length of the roof, but it’s a less clean look than the competition offers.

The new top mechanism consumes very little rear-seat width, so shoulder and elbow room increases by 3.2 and 4.8 inches, and the side glass is 30 percent larger providing an airier view out. Sparse legroom will elicit grimaces from rear-seat riders over fivefoot-six, however, so vacationers will likely use the back seat for luggage. Toward that end, the rear seatback folds down to form a flat carpeted shelf and preserve the seat leather. BMW even offers a custom-fit bag to fill this space. There is a trunk pass-thru, but it’s big enough only for golf clubs and skis, and it can be accessed with the seatback up and the center armrest portion removed. Loading luggage in the trunk with the top down is tricky. Customers opting for the $500 Comfort Access (keyless starting) package can use the key fob to raise the folded top out of the way and load the trunk, but the decklid pivots backward so the gear has to go in over the gunwales. It’s far clumsier than the Volvo/Mercedes approach of raising the top stack with the trunk open normally.

<div style=”float: right; padding-left: 4px;”>

<a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://bp0.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/RknpF8aahmI/AAAAAAAAAFk/R1Aju8CeyXU/s1600-h/112_0704_01l%2B2007_BMW_335i_convertible%2Bright_front_view.jpg”><img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;” src=”http://bp0.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/RknpF8aahmI/AAAAAAAAAFk/R1Aju8CeyXU/s400/112_0704_01l%2B2007_BMW_335i_convertible%2Bright_front_view.jpg” alt=”" id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064835544280368738″ border=”0″ />Opening and closing the top takes just over 20 seconds and can be done from outside the car with the Comfort Access key fob. Operating the top with the car in motion is verboten for legal reasons (pivoting the trunklid back obscures the license plate). Other convertible highlights include an accessory windscreen that can be installed by one person from the driver’s side of the car and leather upholstery treated with an infrared-reflective pigment that can lower the temperature of dark-colored seats by almost 30 degrees. The climate-control system also switches to a top-down mode that redistributes airflow and relies more on the outside-temp and sun sensors than the interior temperature monitors. Safety kit includes pop-up roll-bars and front-seat side airbags with head protection.

Despite the fact that the steel roof and its myriad motors and hydraulics weigh 308 pounds, the finished vehicle weighs just 440 pounds more than the coupe. Credit goes to weight-savers like plastic front fenders and more astute structural reinforcements using varying grades of steel. Torsional rigidity is up 50 percent, and indeed a 335i sport model sampled on smooth Arizona byways felt snare-drum tight, with no dashboard shakes and just an occasional high-frequency vibration following a bump impact with the top up or down. Using the wind blocker, heated seats, and climate-control system, the 3 Series convertible delivers quiet, comfortable, topdown motoring in sunny weather at temps as low as 40 degrees.

Bmw Tops Apeal Survey

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

Author: <a title=”Hailey Kerr” href=”http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/hailey-kerr/27217.htm”>Hailey Kerr

BMW has always had reasons to gloat, it is undoubtedly, one of the leading carmakers when it comes to producing great, and we mean, great, cars.

In fact the latest consumer satisfaction survey has once again revealed that BMW is a winner. And a big one.

The company’s X5 sports activity vehicle — built at BMW Manufacturing Co.’s Greer plant — the BMW 3 series and the BMW 6 series all topped their categories in the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 APEAL survey.

The BMW 5 series and 7 series were runners up in their categories.

The BMW X5 topped the midsize premium multi-activity vehicle segment. That segment includes SUVs and trucks.

A second-generation SUV, the redesigned X5 was launched last November. The first X5 sold successfully through its last days of production and the new X5, says BMW officials, is also now very popular. The plant produced 3,583 X5s during the week of June 18. The X5 will be joined at the plant by the X6 sports activity coupe, on which production will begin next year, and the X3, which is expected to move production to the Greer location around 2010.

”The APEAL study is important because it’s a vote of total confidence in the car,” said Bobby Hitt, public relations manager of BMW Manufacturing. “It is very positive for us, for our customer.”

BMW routinely does well in the APEAL competition, Hitt added. And its especially a pleasure for BMW employees when that vehicle is validated by customers through sales and awards, he said.

Honda led the pack when it came to vehicles topping the list of customer satisfaction, with four cars the most of any car brand. Honda’s four segment leaders were the Fit (in a tie), CR-V, Ridgeline and Odyssey. Honda was followed by rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz with three each at the top of their categories.

J.D. Power conducts the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study annually. The company surveys consumers who have purchased a new model-year vehicle after 90 days of ownership to measure satisfaction in 100 different attributes, including ride and handling, engine and transmission and comfort and convenience. This year it surveyed about 92,000 new-car owners.

About BMW

BMW, or Bavarian Motor Works, is an independent German company and manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. BMW is the parent company of the MINI and Rolls-Royce car brands, as well as maker of top of the line auto parts like BMW 1600 parts. It is also one of the leading German engineering car manufacturers in the world.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/autos-articles/bmw-tops-apeal-survey-177368.html

About the Author:
Hailey Kerr is a Business Administration graduate. BMW 3-Series convertible

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

Top up, now that it has a metal roof, the BMW convertible lacks the crisp sense of purpose achieved by the coupe’s design. Top down, however, it’s a striking statement: fast, yet poised; aggressive, yet not childish. It’s an iconic look that will stand the test of time.

<a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://bp3.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/Ro0E8yYBuyI/AAAAAAAAANs/BdGA1ff20hU/s1600-h/3series+convertible.jpg”><img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;” src=”http://bp3.blogger.com/_JMEKkRIJbzc/Ro0E8yYBuyI/AAAAAAAAANs/BdGA1ff20hU/s400/3series+convertible.jpg” alt=”" id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083724996732369698″ border=”0″ />Interior

Done in black Dakota leather - with new sun-reflective technology that keeps seats up to 36 degrees cooler - our test model reflected the serious nature of BMW design. The front seats support spirited driving, while the back seats are best left to packages, not people. Instruments are precise and easy to read. Buttons are a bit small, but well-organized. There are plenty of storage bins, though the cup holders that pop out of the dash are dreadful.

How it works

While the 335 model gets turbo-chargers, the 328 makes do with BMW’s naturally aspirated 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine. Coupled with a six-speed manual, this motor makes 230 horsepower - up 46 horsepower from last year’s 325Ci convertible and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. With this sweet stick shift, I think there’s plenty of power for most drivers.

Neat bit

BMW adds a retractable hardtop for the first time, and it’s a crowd-pleaser. It lowers in 22 seconds, raises in 23 seconds and is like an electro-hydraulic carnival show. The three-piece steel roof makes for a quiet ride when you decide to keep the top closed. A trunk partition makes for a bit of trunk room, but just a bit.

Fumes

20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. According to fueleconomy.gov, this car with the same engine and transmission will get 17/27 in 2008 using the new EPA formula.

Extras

While the $750 cold-weather package adds heated seats, and the $2,650 premium package adds leather seats and some enhanced mirror functions, it’s the $1,200 sport package with its 18-inch alloy wheels, better tires and sportier suspension that makes this already road-hugging car such a joy on the twisties.

The 328i is easily BMW’s top-selling convertible in the United States, over the other 3-Series variants, the different Z4 models and the 6-Series droptops.

Today’s modern drivers still look to the BMW to deliver the high-end quality for which it has been known for nearly 95 years. And while the BMW may have originated in Munich, Germany, it is a vehicle much beloved in America. If you look to those American cities renowned for glamour and luxury you will inevitably find a strong population of BMW drivers. So it’s no wonder that some of the most popular dealers in the country are BMW Los Angeles dealers.

<p style=”text-align: justify;”>Los Angeles is a city strongly associated with prestige - from the weather to the Hollywood industry; L.A. is home and host to a multitude of high-powered business and entertainment executives; it is where the money is and where the beautiful and rich go to work, live, and vacation. So it should stand to reason that the vehicles being driven in and around Los Angeles carry quite a bit of weight. BMW Los Angeles dealers know that they must deliver a wide variety of BMW models - everything from sedans and compacts, to SUVs and motorcycles - befitting the L.A. lifestyle.

Before purchasing your BMW from a BMW Los Angeles dealer make sure you have aligned your budget with your wish list. Cars for Chicks?

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

Author: <a title=”Ian Williamson” href=”http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/ian-williamson/4166.htm”>Ian Williamson

Looking at different kinds of cars, one can’t help but notice that each car has a special trait, a characteristic that makes it what it is. And we cannot help but categorize a car by its looks and features. On sports cars for girls, one usually arrives at an image of a convertible roadster that is small and compact. To give you a better idea, here are some cars that can be classified as a chick car’.
<p style=”font-weight: bold;”>Volkswagen Beetle
The Volkswagen Beetle is a compact family car that is made in Germany. It is one of the most easily recognized cars in the whole world. Due to its popularity, it has even moved up to a cult status with many loyal followers. It is known as the beetle, bug, or kafer (German) because of its distinctive shape.
<p style=”font-weight: bold;”>Mini Cooper
This car is an affordable, stylish, fun, and compact piece of machinery. It was first designed in 1959 as a car that combines a big interior space with a small car body. It is very appealing to the eye and popular to a wide range of people due to its affordability. With regards to safety issues, the mini cooper employs an anti-lock braking system for more stability and control especially during turns and cornering. The interior of this car is stylish and compact. One drawback is its small storage capacity but that is expected from this type of car. It is not a hot rod’ but it is a fun to drive around the city.
<p style=”font-weight: bold;”>BMW Z4 Roadster
The Z4 is the follow-up to the Z3 series which was first introduced in 1996. It is very popular to both young and old car aficionados because of its aggressive design. It is a bit bigger then the Z3 and its body is much stiffer even when measures were taken to reduce its overall body weight without compromising rigidity. It has a stiff chassis, a variety of transmission options, and large disk brakes that enable this car to provide great comfort and pleasure while driving. These are some of the best sports cars that can be considered as girl’ cars. If you are still thinking of what kind of car you want to get, consider the following: The prices of convertibles start around $20,000 and go up to the hundred thousand range. Engines used usually are four or six cylinder types while the pricier ones employ V6 or V8 engines. Maintenance costs for convertibles are roughly the same as those of sedans and technology has made soft tops stronger and more durable to withstand years of abuse.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/autos-articles/cars-for-chicks-20693.html

About the Author:

For more Car Articles by Ian Williamson please visit http://www.real-articles.com/Category/Cars/145

Renault Aims to Catch Up With Bmw Sauber

September 30, 2007 By: Category: BMW No Comments →

Author: <a title=”Anthony Fontanelle” href=”http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/anthony-fontanelle/15008.htm”>Anthony Fontanelle

For the past two seasons, Renault was the top team to beat in Formula One. But double world champion Fernando Alonso jumped ship to McLaren Mercedes this season. That fact coupled with a slower car for the 2007 season has been dismal for the team. Although they are in fourth place in the constructors championship standings, the team is still looking for ways to improve their cars.

During the past four races, Renault showed an improvement as Giancarlo Fisichella finished fourth at the Monaco Grand Prix and sixth in the French Grand Prix. His teammate Heikki Kovalainen on the other hand finished fourth at the Canadian Grand Prix and fifth in the United States.

Fisichella said that they are now aiming to catch up with third place BMW Sauber. He said that at the British Grand Prix, they will receive good support from the employees of Renaults Enstone plant. It is another home race for us after Magny-Cours, with all the people from the factory at Enstone coming to support the team. So of course, a good result for them would be special.

But also because we have shown in the last few races that we are closing the gap, and we are in the fight. When you are in a situation like that, you want to be racing every weekend, to try and make that little bit more progress. Our fight will be with BMW Sauber again, and the target has to be to finish ahead of them, added Fisi.

The Italian Formula One driver said that he likes competing at the Silverstone Circuit where the British Grand Prix will be held. It’s a fantastic track, one of the legendary circuits in Formula 1 and really selective for the cars and the drivers, noted the Italian driver.

The fast corners need real commitment, a very good chassis and a stable balance which we have now with the R27. It is quite bumpy, and physical with a lot of high g-loads around the lap. A good lap at Silverstone is always satisfying, because the car and the driver both need to be working really well to achieve that. I finished fourth in the last two years, so if we could repeat that result, it would be a great performance for us.

While Fisichella said that they are aiming to overtake BMW in the standings, his teammate Kovalainen said that they are not focusing solely on BMW. The said team fields the F1.07 with engine provided by the Bavarian automaker which also produces <a href=”http://www.stanscycle.com/bmw-e36-parts.html” title=”BMW E36 parts”>BMW E36 parts.

The Finn said that they are also looking to catch up with McLaren and Ferrari. It’s always hard to say before the event but if the trend continues, then they will be the ones we are looking out for, said Kovalainen referring to McLaren and Ferrari.

At the moment, it is very difficult to say if we are ahead of them or behind in terms of pure performance, but we are not focusing all our energy on BMW. We have to look beyond them, to McLaren and Ferrari, because we want to beat them too eventually. I know we will get there eventually, and keep on pushing to make sure we do.

Renault currently has 28 points to its credit after eight races. The team trails BMW by 20 points, Ferrari by 61 and McLaren by 86 points. With nine races left in the 2007 Formula One calendar, Renault needs to make their move immediately.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/autos-articles/renault-aims-to-catch-up-with-bmw-sauber-177519.html

About the Author:
Anthony Fontanelle is a 35-year-old automotive buff who grew up in the Windy City.
